If you saw HBO’s World Championship Boxing last night with Miguel Cotto destroying Alfonso Gomez, you will know why Cotto vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs to happen later this year instead of the rematch of Mayweather vs. Oscar De La Hoya.
Cotto is undefeated in his 32 fights with 26 KOs and deserves to get a shot Mayweather after beating the likes of “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Zab Judah. Mayweather beat Judah so the likely fight of him and Cotto would be the more sensible fight. Mayweather would be favored as he is also undefeated in 39 fights with 25 KOs (his knockout against Big Show at Wrestlemania 24 does not count). However the fight that is most likely next for Cotto is going to be against Antonio Margarito in July.
Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) beat Kermit Cintron last night in convincing fashion with a body shot to the liver. Cintron looked like he was a beaten fighter during the last moments of the fight as he kept asking the referee on take points away Margarito for supposed rabbit punches. Nevertheless, Margarito showed that he was still in the welterweight ranks as coming back from his embarssing loss from Paul Williams last year. Margarito wants the fight with Cotto because he in his own right is a threat to Mayweather.
Mayweather turned down a 8 million payday to fight Margarito for the De La Hoya fight last year. Margarito would pose a problem to Mayweather because he has a middleweight look in the welterweight division and punches very hard. Cotto would be a more serious problem for Mayweather because he has faster hand speed than Margarito and punches as hard as Margarito. Not to say that Mayweather is weak because he clearly brought some power when he came back down to welterweight to TKO Ricky Hatton after the junior middleweight fight with De La Hoya. Mayweather is faster than both fighters and would be the favorite. However, the size differential would be a factor in the possible fights. The winner of the Margarito/Cotto fight deserves to face Mayweather but don’t count out the man that Mayweather faces this fall yet, De La Hoya. If De La Hoya wins the rematch with Mayweather, the touted welterweight division with Mayweather, Mosley, Hatton, Judah, Williams, Margarito, and Cotto can go into a limbo.
